The FAHRENFORT family, my husband's ancestors:

The FAHRENFORT family comes from Quernheim/Lemförde, landeskreis Diepholz in Lower Saxony, Germany, where my husband's oldest known ancestor was born.

He married Alida Dorothea FOLG, born Cape Town, South Africa, in Cape Town on 1 January 1837. He remarried Filia ABRAHAMSE, born Cape Town, in Cape Town 7 August 1843 . They got one son and two daughters. Most likely all South African Fahrenforts are descendants of Friedrich Wilhelm, though other still unknown sibling(s) might also have emigrated to South Africa.
It is possible that Gerhard Friedrich and Charlotte got more children either before 1803 or between 1804 and 1813, perhaps in a village nearby, named Oppendorf, where on 15 April 1824 Anne Marie Louise Fahrenfort, married to Johann Heinrich Losche, got a son Heinrich Wilhelm Losche. Their descendants also emigrated to Welcome area in Texas, USA.

Johann Hinrich married Anna Cornelia SPIEGELBERG in Amsterdam on 14 October 1846. The VAN MAAREN family, my mother's ancestors:

The VAN MAAREN family is already very old. The first VAN DER MAERN, Arnout, was born about 1265 somewhere in the vicinity of the Maerne area near Utrecht in The Netherlands. His descendants can be traced all the way till the present time, though from time to time there is some uncertainty. A lot of research was done by the "Vereniging Het Van Ma(a)ren Genootschap", Rozenhaag 6, 3831 CB Leusden, The Netherlands.

About 1420 Jacob VAN MAREN was born in Utrecht and he became a knight of the Teutonic (religious) Order.  The three French lilies can be found in many family arms in the vicinity of Utrecht.

Official seals of Van Maaren families.

Many men in the VAN MAAREN pedigree had official functions, like church prior, priest, judge or alderman. There even was a female prior in the family. The early families all lived not too far away from Utrecht; one branch moved to Tiel, another one to Zaltbommel, Gouda and Gellicum/Herwijnen. My mother's ancestors are descended from this branch. The name changed several times, even within one family: one child could have had a family name different from his brother or sister. At present it occurs as Van (der) Maaren, Van Maren, Van Mare, Van Maare, De Mare, De Maare and Van der Maer(e)n. One can find these names not only in The Netherlands, but also in Belgium, Germany, USA and Australia.

1. Hendrik Jacobs VAN MAREN, born Tiel about 1655, died Beesd aafter 1704, married 1692 Magteltjen Ariens VAN BEECK, born Buren, died after May 1705. They got most likely eight or nine children. There might have been another daughter Petronella, baptized Tiel 22 November 1701, who died before 1705. (Information Van Maaren Genootschap.)
Most likely Hendricus got, out of wedlock, a son from Lijn (Jansz) LUBBERDEN, named Hendrik, baptized Beesd 5 May 1695.

  1. Maria VAN DER MAER, baptized Tiel 16 July 1694
  2. Hendrik VAN MAEREN, baptized Tiel 16 March 1696, died after 1740 (see 2.)

The NIETFELD family, my father's and my ancestors:

The NIETFELD family originates from the county of Oldenburg, e.g. Dinklage and Vechta. Already on 17 December 1279 this name was mentioned in the "Oldenburger Urkundenbuch", telling about property in "Dynclaghe" and a house in "Nydvelde". The Nietfeld family - of which the name is written in several ways, like Nydtfeldt, Niedfelt, Nietfelt or Nietfeld - owned (a) large farm(s) and their daughters were very much liked as marriage candidates. The men sometimes even changed their name into Nietfeld to become co-heir of the farm together with their wife. Of course only the eldest son (or daughter) could inherit the farm. The others got a small piece of land and tried to make a living out of it as "Kötter", "Meier", "Heuermann" or "Zeller". Many of them had a second profession as a craftsman.
In the 19th century many of these "relatives" tried their luck in Holland or the United States. Bremerhaven became a major point of departure for them. My 3rd great-grandfather came as a sailor to Amsterdam, just like his brothers. Two of their uncles had moved before and lived already in Amsterdam.

It is most likely that the Nietveld and Nietvelt families who lived in Amsterdam from about 1750 are related to the Nietfeld families. These families too originate from Dinklage and Vechta in Germany. A Wessel NIETVELD and his brother Harmanus, sons of Johannes NIETVELD and Trijntje WAGENAAR and a Barent NIETVELT are the first members of these families who moved from the Dinklage area to Amsterdam. The first two about 1775 and the latter one about 1750.

Around 1660 another Nietvelt had come from Bremen to Amsterdam, i.e. Jochem Nietvelt, born Bremen about 1645, son of Juriaen Nietvelt. Jochem married Brigandie CLEMENT in Amsterdam on 13 October 1668 (marriage bans). They got at least seven children. One of their grandsons moved to Belgium where his descendants still live. Brigandie was married before to Pieter PIETERS and they were most likely the parents of Catrijn PIETERS, wife of the in the Netherlands famous puppet player Jan KLAASSEN.

1. Jois NYDTFELDT, also named as Joes NITVELT, my earliest known ancestor was born in the area of Dinklage about 1645, and married Anna BRINKMANNS, Dinklage 25 October 1671. Witness was Joes RACKHORST.
One of their children was Johann (Joes/Joan), born or baptized 24 April 1672 (see 2.). Joan might have had a relative Hermann NIEDFELT, born 10 August 1671, died 2 January 1754. He married Gesina SCHULTE on 18 October 1707.

2. Joan (Johann) NIEDFELT, born or baptized in Dinklage on 24 April 1672 and died in Bakum, Germany, on 7 December 1729. He married Catharina PLUMP in Bakum on 5 June 1695. She was born in 1673 and died in Bakum on 30 November 1700. They had one son Heribertus (see 3.).
